Meeting of the managers of the pirarucu fish and to assess the fishing 2023

The event is being promoted by the Collective of the Pirarucu brought together managers from different parts of the state, as well as the technical support organisations, and representatives of the federal and state governments and the agencies of international cooperation

From the 28th to the 30th of November, the representatives of the 29 organizations, associations, community organisations, non-governmental organizations and agencies of the government had gathered in the city of Manaus (AM) – for the 10th Meeting of the Collective and the Arapaima. The meeting was held to assess the sustainable management of arapaima in the year 2023, the strengthening of strategies and partnerships, as well as projecting the prospects of the group’s operations in 2024. 

During the three days of the event, the 60 participants of the meeting discussed issues such as the impact of the drought on the activity of the management and the process of certification of the pirarucu, the possibility of access to a Payment for Environmental Services (PES), the international rules for the slaughter humane of your fish and improving the governance of society.

In the dry season, the historic rivers of the amazon, in 2023, has been particularly challenging for the managers of the arapaima, which faced a number of challenges to the conduct of the business. The difficulties of access to the lakes for fishing, and to increase the costs are just a few of the problems that these communities have had to deal with. The change in the weather, in addition to the phenomenon of El Niño events, and help explain to you the biggest season ever fought in the state of Amazonas.

‘Compared to the previous years, the drought in the river has increased a lot of the time in fishing and transport to the arapaima. In the year 2022, close to the fishing in the 12-day period, and this year we took it for 21 days. The longer the time, the more cost,’ explains Francisco, Paumari, co-ordinating the management of the people in the Paumari activity that can be done in three Indigenous territories located on the banks of the river Tapauá.

In spite of the difficulties posed by the drought, the people, the Paumari was able to catch 495 pirarucu, for a total of approximately 30,5 tons of fish. San Francisco attaches to the achievement of the strong connection to the people of the Paumari, and the all-important partnership initiatives, such as in the Roots of the State’, a project carried out by the Operation in the Amazon’s Native (OPAN), and is sponsored by Petrobras, the brazilian Federal Government, which supports the management of people, the Paumari since 2013. 

‘We have plenty of the union, and the commitment to make it happen. I think this does give me an example for others who are new, who want to start the task. The european union is that we have come up with the things that will be,’ says the project coordinator.
