Suyani Availability leads to the struggle of the peoples of the Juruena (MT), to the COP of the Youth

The 300 young people from 19 countries in Latin America have joined their voices in the city of Belém (PA), to build a more sustainable future.

The young man Suyani the Availability of a 19 years-old, of Indian Land, Tirecatinga in Sapezal (MT), has been chosen for an important mission: they must take the needs and suggestions of young people in the basin of the rio Juruena, and in the state of Mato Grosso, to the Regional Conference of Youth on Climate change in Latin America (RCOY 2024), which has been referred to as the COP of your Youth.

The RCOY in Latin America, the leading forum for youth to discuss climate change in the region, gathered in the city of Belém (PA), between the 6th and the 10th of September, about 300 children from more than 19 countries. The event was organized by the united nations Framework Convention United Nations convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), has provided a space for young people to be able to share their ideas, experiences, and approaches to contribute to a sustainable future.

“For us to have a future, and we need to have the gift to leave behind. I’m on the side of the river, Which we had never seen before to dry out. This year, for the first time. The elders say that the world is changing and it’s changing for the worse. This is a major crisis, and it’s a concern that I have in my territory, and that’s what I did to get here,” he said Suyani Availability. 

After 10 sessions of training in a virtual four meetings and intense negotiations in the four thematic areas, young people resulted in proposals for socio-biodiversity, education in a climate of participation and climate governance.

The proposals that have been made by the Suyani is the result of a collaborative process and a democratic regime that took place during the training sessions in the climate justice carried out by the Network of the Juruena Live in), in partnership with the Operation of the Amazon-Native (OPAN), and the Movement of those Affected by Dams (MAB), in the villages and Mountains of Blue in IT Tirecatinga and Ytu IT Apiaka-Kayabi, with the young people of the five regions of the rivers, Which, of Blood, and a Parrot, and of the people Kawaiwete, Apiaká and the Munduruku. The other participants were the representatives of the House of the Cult of the St. Sebastian and the health care team. These workshops were supported by the Institute for Climate and Society (cis), the Coalition of Us – ‘ Voices for Climate Action (VAC) and the Brazil Human Rights Fund (FBDH).

“Before I was in the RCOY 2024, within the bounds we’ve had to listen to what young people think about climate change in the context of day to day life. In the same speech, and the statements have been taken to the state capital to be entered into a letter declaring the youth of America, with a proposal for addressing the climate. I hope that in the next event of the RCOY to have a greater participation of youth in indian, as a whole, and also of the communities and the traditional.

Among them are the implementation of programs of a community reforestation and conservation policies that protect the sensitive areas, in addition to strengthening the practice of sustainable forest management and to promote times for training on a regular basis to enable the country on issues of climate and providing the tools to monitor and adapt to climate change.

The executive secretary of the Network of the Juruena Live, Liliane Xavier, also attended the event and noted that it is critical to be present at these spaces that impact and shape the reality and the effects they are feeling on the skin, contributing to proposals to deal with this time of turmoil in the climate at the location of the ground in the communities and to the global level.

“We need to move forward with a policy of strengthening the economic value of biodiversity that we have, and the knowledge of the people who live here, from time out of mind. In addition to this, listen to the people, and along with them as they work toward the development of plans for coping with the local plans, the municipality and the state where the shares are serious mitigation and adaptation, taking in the different sectors of society, and to promote the necessary changes in the planet, which are also changing.”

The final text of the RCOY2024 was handed over officially to the special rapporteur of the UN, and to the authorities of the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change (MMA) and the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples ‘ (MPI), is an important step so that the voices of young people’s voices are heard at the highest levels of decision-making.

The document will be re-united with the claims of the other six regions of the world, World Conference of Youth, which takes place every year the week before the COP of the Weather.

In addition to the young people, the event brought together leaders from a variety of sources, such as the cacique (chief) Raoni Metuktire, the grand-daughter and great grand-daughter of Chico Mendes and the representatives of the communities, extractive industries and situations.

The RCOY 2024 has also been marked by a tribute to the cacique (chief) Raoni, who has received an award from the symbolic, in recognition of his leadership and dedication to the cause of the environment. At that time, the participants reaffirmed their alliance for the peoples of the forest, and strengthening the bonds that unite the indigenous peoples, the region, descendants of runaway slaves, in the extractive industries, and traditional communities in the fight for the protection of the follow-up.
