OPAN at COP 30

To strengthen the struggle of the indigenous peoples and traditional communities for climate justice

In the year 2025, the OPAN, a constant presence at the 30th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention to the United Nations Framework on Climate Change (COP 30), which will be held in the city of Belém (PA), driven by the agenda of indigenous peoples and traditional communities. Participation in this reaffirms the organization’s commitment to climate justice and the construction of solutions in the areas, where the fight against climate change is carried out in a real way every day.

In the presence of OPAN, the COPs started in the year 2015, when they launched with the publication of “Perceptions of Indigenous peoples on Climate Change,”a dialogue on traditional know-how embedded in the global discussion on climate change.

Starting in 2018, the foundation began to support your participation in the Network of the Juruena Vivo, highlighting the need to rethink the hydroelectric projects in the Amazon region, with an impact on environmental and social highlight of the possibility of such a model as a response to the climate crisis.

In the past few years, OPAN, have also increased their performance on the Platform of the Local Communities and Indigenous Peoples (LCIPP)of the UNFCCC, to strengthen the presence and the role of indigenous peoples and local communities in the decision-making overall.

On the side of the indigenous peoples, the indigenous and the social and environmental, in the OPAN, has been promoting events in parallel on the Blue Zone of the COP, with a debate focused on climate justice, the implementation of the National Policy for the Management of the Environmental, Territorial and Indigenous Lands (PNGATI), with the strengthening of mitigation and adaptation policies.

In the year 2025, the institution’s support for the presence of the indigenous leaders, and community representatives are typical of the COP, 30, and contributing to, a schedule of the unit deals with the chains of the socio-biodiversity, climate adaptation, carbon markets, the protection of defenders, and advocates for environmental PNGATI, and the protection of property rights.
