People Banawa and the Jamamadi take place on the first expeditions to the surveillance of the territorial integrated

Between the months of August and September of this year, the peoples of Banawa and the Jamamadi, who live in the region of the Purus in the Amazon, conducted the first experiment in the surveillance of territorial integration. In total, there were six expeditions to the banks of the river Curiá, driving a team of 15 people, including indigenous people of the two countries, and the servers in the Front of the Protection of ethno-environmental (FPE) is a Wood-State of the National Foundation for Indigenous Peoples (Funai).

The action is the result of a Workshop for Basic knowledge of the Surveillance of the territory, which took place in June, with the participation of the indigenous peoples Jamamadi and Banawa. As the flow of the workshop, first-hand experience of the surveillance of the territorial built in was planned. The training which took place in June, and the expedition had the support of the FPE with the Wood and State-of Funai, and the Roots of the State’, a project carried out by the Operation in the Amazon’s Native (OPAN), with the support of the oil by the Federal Government.

‘In the surveillance of the trial is planned to take place in a time sensitive in regards to the invasion. The contract for the service is to carry out first-hand experience of the focus of the partnership between the two countries, which could take place for the next season of drought,’ says Antonio Miranda, the indigenous people of OPAN.

The first results of

To carry out the expedition, the indians have formed teams, along with Funai, who took turns with each shipment. In a small dugout canoes to the engine, the indigenous people have gone through the Curiá over the course of 14 hours, long enough to cover the entire length of the river. The teams of surveillance have come in contact with illegal and Funai has made the withdrawal of a canoe, in addition to destroying the camp, which served as the basis for activities that are illegal in the territory of Jamamadi.

The activity of surveillance, of which the indigenous people, it is a practice that is preventive-protective, territorial, and do not have coercive power. And when the barbarians are invading promoting the predatory activities in their territories, and you can tell them that the action was illegal, and forward the complaint to the appropriate authorities. For this reason, the monitoring, which is carried out by government agencies such as the agency then it is just as important. It is the one that can stop you from the fact that the wrongful acts occurring on indian Lands, making seizures, and other actions to curb possible crime.

The Lands of the Indigenous Jarawara/Jamamadi/Kanamanti and Banawa we share the same river, the Curiá. The region is under intense pressure due to the trapping of the turtles and the eggs, which puts you at risk of a Native Land, the Hi-Merimã, close to that of the peoples of Banawa and the Jamamadi, an area with the presence of indigenous peoples in isolation. The implementation of the joint activities of the territorial protection is of the utmost importance in order to discourage illegal activities, and protect the lands of indigenous people. 

‘It’s a long work, and that was just the first test. It was a very positive one, as it showed the unity between the two people, and the agency then making their presence felt in the body in the region. With the support and encouragement of indigenous people feel more safe and empowered to defend their territory,’ says Antonio.

The next steps In 2024, and is scheduled to hold a meeting to review with the teams involved in the surveillance of the trial. It is expected that shipments of integrated monitoring, coupled with the constant sharing of information, and will continue to over the next year, the consolidated and further strengthening of the protection of the territorial Lands of Indigenous people.
