Amazonas Program
In the state of Amazonas, OPAN currently carries out work in the southern part of the state in partnership with the indigenous peoples Paumari of the Tapauá River, Apurinã and Jamamadi, in the Middle Purus River region; Kawahiva in the Madeira River basin, and, in the southwest region, with the Deni of the Xeruã River in the Middle Juruá River basin. Brazil: lessons from the water people
Faced with a dramatic decline in pirarucu, a fish that is essential to their survival, the Paumari people of Amazonas state took part in a programme to restore the species, combining scientific and traditional knowledge. After a few years, the fish are once again populating the Purus River.
