Repudiation note: violent action inflicted on the indigenous people, among them the federal deputy Célia Xakriabá, is an attack on democracy in Brazil
Operation Native Amazon (OPAN) repudiates the violence committed by the security forces of the Federal District against indigenous people gathered at the 21st Terra Livre camp and against federal deputy Célia Xakriabá last night, April 10, 2025, during the March peacefully entitled “The answer is us”.
We deeply repudiate this attack and everything it represents: a mostly anti-indigenous National Congress, incapable of respecting democracy and recognizing Brazil as the territory of indigenous peoples.
Unfortunately, a congress that misses the precious opportunity of the Terra Livre camp for learning and the elevation of their knowledge and their place in the world, a unique moment for those who are interested in qualifying in the legislative exercise of the country.
We express our support to the wounded people, who marched peacefully into their ancestral songs, and were surprised by unjustifiable violence. Our respect and solidarity also to deputy Célia Xakriabá, an indigenous parliamentarian attacked while marching with her people, and we wish her to remain firm in her purpose of active representation of the Brazilian people, with the resistance and strength she demonstrates throughout her trajectory.
We reiterate the support of OPAN for the entire struggle of indigenous peoples.
Operation Native Amazon (OPAN), April 11, 2025.
