At the 13th Meeting of the group of the Pirarucu fish, more than 80 participants and celebrate progress updates on the certification of the fish, and the Program, Arapaima, and strengthening the bonds between the communities and the strengthening of the power of the people

The annual meeting of the Coletivo do Pirarucu has already been consolidated as a landmark in the calendar of the community-based organisations, civil society organisations and government agencies involved in the sustainable management of arapaima in the Amazon river. With regular meetings, the group has to overcome the challenges, celebrated the achievements, as well as increase in both the activity and the social organization of the communities, manejadoras. In may, in the run-up to the Week of the Environment, and more than 80 participants gathered in the city of Manaus to the 13th meeting of the Group.

Representatives of 25 organizations from different parts of the state, and profiles from the activity, but which have as their common objective is the strengthening of a sustainable management of the pirarucu fish, and, consequently, the maintenance and enhancement of the social and environmental benefits and cost generated by the activity. Among the topics discussed are the personal accounts of the experiences of the communities in manejadoras, the COP, 30, research, and public policy, in addition to matters relating to the internal governance of the group. 

“I am part of the group since the beginning, and it can be clearly seen, as the group has matured. Today, there is a strong trust between the organizations, and the people are united, organized, and prepared, to look for improvements in our communities,” he said Ocemir to Save the Saints, the Municipal Secretary for fish and Fisheries of the Jutaí (AM), and a representative of the Associação dos Comunitários que Trabalham com Desenvolvimento Sustentável no Município de Jutaí (ACJ).

The sharing of experiences

The meeting began with a presentation on the experiences of communities in the management of 2024. The representatives of the 15 areas that have reported their results in the production of, and the involvement of local communities, and the logistical challenges made worse by the drought of the rivers, and to the impacts of climate change are perceived in different territories.

To Ocemir, the exchange of experience that is at the heart of the strengthening of the Coletivo. “The exchange of experiences between the different areas of management, it’s something that’s very important. For us, it managers, it’s inspiring to see a group like this, with people, organized, and engaged in discussions on how we can live in harmony with nature. In each meeting, the group is a chance to learn more and to strengthen that relationship,” he said.

Public policy

The policies related to the sustainable management of the arapaima is the agenda in the meetings of the group, which have been consolidated as a qualified as a dialogue between the communities and the representatives of the government. The construction and improvement of stocks gain is consistent with the listener directly to the territories, and the articulation of the different levels of government and civil society organizations.

They were present at the 13th edition of the representatives of bodies such as the ministry of the Environment and Climate Change (MMA) and the Fisheries and Aquaculture (MPA) of the Agriculture (MAPA), and the Development of the Agrarian and Agriculture (MDA), in addition to municipalities such as the National Supply Company (Conab), the Instituto Brasileiro do Meio Ambiente e dos recursos naturais Renováveis (Ibama),the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio), the National Foundation for the Indigenous People (Funai) and the Agency for the Sustainable Development of the Amazon (ADS).

“Public policy must be built on the recipient part of the process, so that you have an identity and to be as effective as possible. For this reason, it is critical to the impact of the Collective of these buildings,” said John Woods, co-ordinator to support the partnership’s General Coordination of the Joint Federal, and Local Systems of Food Supply (CGAB/MDA). “With the certification, the inclusion of arapaima in the PGPMBio, indicators, and research, produced with the information generated by the group, this is a direct result of the actions of the team, and has helped to support and enhance the development of public policy,” he said.

After nearly a decade of mobilization and the influence of the Collective, the arapaima is managed in a sustainable manner can, in short, to be recognized as the product, subject to certification. According to the new wording of the rules, which will be made via the inter-Ministerial directive, and defines the criteria for the certification of the products resulting from the extraction of the sustainable, organic, and was presented at a public hearing was held at the opening of the agenda of the 13th Meeting of the Collective and the Arapaima, the presence of the representatives of the ministry of the MPA, and a MAP.

The Program Arapaima

During the meeting, the agency presented the next steps for the newly created Program Arapaima (Ordinance no. 22/2025), which recognize and strengthen the practices of the community are focused on the protection of the aquatic environment, and the management of the pirarucu. The initiative seeks to increase the benefit of social and economic, and ecological-to the communities in which they operate in the conservation of the lowland amazon. The representatives of the agency were also present at the meeting, presenting the next steps of the initiative, and concluding with the group this goal together.

“We are very excited for the Program Arapaima have been set up. It was a claim of a long-standing experience in the management, it was something more powerful such as a national policy, and it’s a good experience with Amazon would be taken to other states,” said Ana Claudia Torres, coordinator of the Program for the Management of the Fisheries of the Institute for Sustainable Development in Mamirauá (dme files).

With the approach of the 30th Conference of the United Nations, on Climate Change, which will be held in November this year in the city of Belém (PA), the group has also been used to ensure the presence and visibility at the event. During the meeting, they were mapped to the organizations that will be at the conference and set up a working group for the production of strategic materials, and organization of the co-located events, with a focus on strengthening the programme for the sustainable management of the arapaima at the forefront of the international agenda.
