Projects, progress, and the largest river basin in the MT, the sum of 56 hydro
Nearly one-third (56) of the 180 projects in this list are already under construction or in operation, while in the other, and 124 are in the planning stage, at the expense of the socio-biodiversity, regional
The Newsletter of the Monitoring of the Pressure and Threat of the Indigenous Lands in the Basin of the rio Juruena, which is produced by the Operation in the Amazon’s Native (OPAN), we identified a significant step forward in the process of enterprise licensing hydroelectric power plants planned for the basin of the rio Juruena, which is located in the northeast of the state. May, 2023 February 2024, from crop to the last newsletter, the five projects that have progressed to the stages of construction or operation.
Now, the 180 projects hydroelectric power plants planned for the basin, of which 56 are now in the phase of building and construction (9%), or operation (22%), which is equivalent to roughly one-third of the total (31%). On the other, and 124 (69%) are in the planning stages, as in the case of a Generating station Hydroelectric power plant (CGH) River, the Greys, who, in spite of being one of the power plants with the greatest risk, that is scheduled on the agenda for this month, the Council of State for the Environment in the Mato Grosso state for a waiver from the Environmental Impact Study and Environmental Impact Report EIS/EIR.
“The STORY River of the avenue is located in an area that is extremely important for the conservation of biodiversity, and to make a contribution pífia in terms of power generation. If you built it, you could be the first hydroelectric power plant on the river, a Parrot, which has a strategic role to be one of the last ones, even without the dams in the watershed. It’s unexplainable, it’s the TRUTH tell the dismissal of the environmental impact assessment studies it is precisely the license of this project,” says Andreas Fanzeres, co-ordinator of the Rights of Indigenous people of OPAN.

of THE STORY River of the Parrots, it is the sixth-worst in the project, in accordance with the risk-locational one’s list of 27 considered to be high-risk in the basin. “It’s an area of natural barriers that prevent you from gaining access to the main channel (of a river), so there are many endemic species. This is a small project that generates a low-energy (up to 5 mw), but very high impact. The benefit and the cost is very bad,” said researcher Peter’s Bar, considered to be one of the main references on the subject, at the time of the the publication of a study of his own on the social and environmental risk in the development of hydropower in the basin of the Juruena rivers.
The dams have affected the internal dynamics of many of the indigenous people of the region. The Enawenê-Nawê, for example, do not have enough fish to feed, and the practice of rituals. “The advancement of the sector, the group poses a threat to food security and in the reproduction of culture of the peoples of the basin,” points out Mr Felipe Rodrigues Pereira, geographer, and author of the newsletter.
The newsletter of the monitoring of pressures and threats
The proliferation of projects and draw the attention in the newsletter. Between 2019 and 2023, we have identified 51 new projects, going from 128 to 179, which is an increase of 39.8% in just five years. But this time around, compared to the previous bulletin (may 2023), there was an increase of only one project.
The thing is, the STORY Claudette is designed for the river, Seven of them. They were 179 and now we’re down to 180, which are divided into 83 Hydropower Plants (CGHs) with a power output of up to 5 megawatts; and 72 of Small Hydropower Plants (Shps), with a power output of between 5 and 30 MW, and 25 Hydroelectric power Plants (Hpps), which will operate up to 30 MW.
In addition to the new development and is designed for the region, it was found that the progress in the licensing process for the other five projects that have already been mapped out. The three have moved from the planning phase to the construction STORY of Redemption STORY-Farm Association, and the belo monte hydroelectric PLANT in Mato Grosso) and the other two jumped out of the status of the construction and operation-STORY, Two Bridges, and the PLANT is a River, of Course).
“There was a certain degree of stagnation in the number of new ventures, but the licensing process in the following passage of time. Rather than to propose new projects, and the companies that want to take on the role in which they are already established. This situation may indicate a trend for the next few years,” says Mr Felipe Rodrigues Pereira, geographer, and author of the report.

In the basin of the rio Juruena rivers draining to be around 19 million hectares-an area which includes 23 of the territories for more than a decade of indigenous people, in addition to the 29 municipalities. It is divided into the following five sub-basins of the data in the bulletin are described in more detail in the following.
The Sub-basin of the rio Arinos
Out of the five projects that have moved forward in the stages of implementation, four are located in the sub-region (CGH Finance Association, STORY of Redemption STORY, Two Bridges, and in the tender, the River, of Course). In addition to the 180 projects were identified in the region, and 48 are located in the sub-region, where the 34-CGHs (71%), 10 Units (21%), and four hydroelectric power plants (8%).
The Sub-basin of the rio Juruena
In addition, of the 18 power Plants, operating in the whole of the basin, and 10 are located in the sub-region, which represents 55% of the total. It also draws the attention of a number of hydroelectric projects in the Juruena river, that trumps all the other rivers in the basin. There are 20 projects in various stages of implementation.
The Sub-basin of the Kite

Newsletter tracking
The purpose of the report card for the Monitoring of Pressures and Threats to Indigenous Lands within the Watershed of the rio Juruena, is to track the movements related to the design and implementation of power plants to assess how well the territories of indigenous peoples are being pushed by these developments, and if there is any violation of the rights of indigenous peoples, environmental, or interference with existing or prospective, of such projects, in the exercise of knowledge and practices of these peoples in the territories marked, and their traditional occupation.
The methodology involves the collection and cross-checking of information from multiple sources of data to the public. The newsletter is an important tool of information and protection of rights, after all, are the appellants in the cases of rape in a case involving the ventures to the front, as detailed in the report, “The Right to be consulted and to Free, Prior, and Informed consent in the state of Mato Grosso,” which is produced by the Operation in the Amazon’s Native (OPAN), in partnership with the centre for the Protocols and reference.
