A week of celebrations to mark the 25th anniversary of the handling of arapaima in the Amazon river

Schedule it came to pass in the month of June in the city of Manaus (AM), and included meetings, board meetings, and other tributes

From the 8th to the 14th of June, in Manaus, the city hosted a busy week of events that have marked the 25th anniversary of the establishment of a system of sustainable management of arapaima in the Amazon river. The program included the participation of the representatives of the 50 organizations, associations, community organisations, non-governmental organizations and agencies of the government of the state and federal governments to celebrate the more than two decades of achievements and discuss the challenges of the future.

Organized by the Collective of the Pirarucu, the Instituto Brasileiro do Meio Ambiente e dos recursos naturais Renováveis (Ibama) and the Instituto Mamirauá, and with the support of the us Forest Service (USFS), the U.s. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio), the event counted with the participation of more than 130 people, related to the activity of the management of the pirarucu fish from different areas of the state.

“The term ‘management’ was a reference to the fish. But it soon became apparent that you have far more to do with the people, their skills, their ancestry, and their relationship with the place,” said Ana Claudia Torres, coordinator of the Program for the Management of the Fisheries of the Instituto Mamirauá.

A meeting of the Women’s Manejadoras

“I’m pretty sure that the women manejadoras have a group that you can look out for and help in the empowerment, if you want to create a future that will be able to bring appreciation for the work of all of us, women and young people,” said Vania da Silva, de Souza, in the Community of the Japurá, the region of the Middle Purus river, who took part in the meeting.

“In 2023, the group gains a lot of different levels of the federal government, as a result of the schedule of the incidence of Brasilia. For the protection of the territory and of the lakes of the management, it is considered to be one of the biggest challenges of the activity and, as most of the communities in manejadoras deal on a daily basis with the pressure of invasions and illegal activities in the surrounding area. In the year 2022, the group drew up a note group complaints made by managers in different regions of the Amazon, while also addressing the practice of criminal diverse and are associated with the illegal fishing, and the worse the situation is unsafe.

Due to the importance of the subject, and the urgency of the effective action for the Collective of the Pirarucu fish arranged in a specific schedule in order to discuss and to plan for actions at all levels of government. In the Workshop of Community Surveillance and Enforcement in the Areas of Management of Arapaima in the Amazon river , took place between the 10th and the 11th of June, including the programming of the 11th Meeting of the Group.

In addition to the debates, and panels, the participants were divided into three Working Groups (Wgs) for in-depth discussion and the development of the proposed actions. The working Groups of the The community surveillance, Monitoring and Security , counted with the participation of representatives of federal agencies such as Ibama, ICMBio and the National Foundation for Indigenous Peoples (Funai) and the organs of the state, such as the  Command, enforcement, and Environmental aspects of the Military Police of Amazonas, brazil.

“The workshop has achieved a result far greater than we had expected. The hope was to understand the context and the start of reflections, but you’ve already come out with great directions. It’s a sensitive topic, difficult, and it hurt deeply over the life of the people,” he said, Fernanda Alvarenga, a consultant that is part of the team, and he has served as a mediator for the event.

At the end of the event, the agency and the Instituto Mamirauá, received a tribute in recognition of the significant contribution of the two institutions, one that is intrinsically linked to the history of the management of the pirarucu.
